Side-view tracking problems

Why did an Error Recording message appear after I recorded?

The app couldn't read that side recording well, and the message tells you why: "Not enough pedal strokes to analyze", "Unable to accurately analyze this video", "Detected a lot of variation in these results", or "Unable to detect a complete pedal stroke". It's usually not enough light, a body point it couldn't see clearly (most often the hip or the foot), or pedaling that stopped before the recording finished. Fix that and record again. The recording is still saved, but don't adjust your bike from it. A front recording never shows this message; check its Toe Tracking instead.

The app can't track me well. What helps?
  • Light. Bright, even light. A window behind you is the most common problem.
  • Contrast. The app needs to see your hip and your foot. Dark shorts against a dark trainer, or loose clothing over your hip, make that hard.
  • Everything in frame, the whole time. Your whole body and bike need to stay in the frame for the entire recording, not just at the start. Watch your foot at the bottom of the stroke in particular.
  • A level camera. The alignment aid in the bottom-left corner of the recording screen shows a green rectangle when the phone is level and square to the bike, and arrows when it needs tilting or rotating. It checks the phone's angle, not your framing, so check both.
  • Keep pedaling smoothly until the recording ends.
Why doesn't recording start right away?

That's the delay. By default, the app waits for you to start pedaling and counts 10 pedal strokes before it records. Tap the delay selector to switch to a countdown instead.

What if analysis takes several minutes, or the app looks frozen?

On older devices, More Precise tracking can be slow. Before you record, tap ··· → Tracking on the recording screen and choose Faster. Faster takes less time but can be less accurate on difficult videos.

Why doesn't an old video I imported have markerless results?

Videos recorded in very early versions of BFF Elite used points placed by hand and don't pick up markerless tracking on their own. On the recording page, first check the recording is set to the correct side (Left Side, Right Side, or Front), then tap ··· → Analysis → Reanalyze (on a side recording, Reanalyze (Quick) or Reanalyze (Precise)).

Can I record for longer?

Not in Elite, but you can import a clip of up to 5 seconds from your Photos library. Pro adds 5-, 10-, and 15-second recordings.
