Troubleshooting & FAQs
Recording problems
This is where most issues start, because every measurement is downstream of a clean recording. If the numbers look wrong, suspect the recording first.
A red warning triangle showed up on my recording. That means the recording couldn't produce a trustworthy measurement, for one of two reasons:
- "Not enough pedal strokes", the app didn't catch enough strokes to compute a result. Pedal steadily through the whole capture and past the final beep.
- "Unable to track", the app couldn't follow your body clearly enough. Almost always lighting or visibility (more below).
Either way, the displayed values aren't reliable. Just re-record. (Lesson 2 walks through both in more detail.)
"Error Recording" or "unable to capture media." Most often the app doesn't have camera permission: iOS Settings → BFF EZ → make sure Camera is on. Other causes are low storage on the device (the message will say so) or stopping pedaling before the capture finishes.
The app can't track me well. What helps?
- Light. Strong, even light, ideally daylight. Backlight (a bright window behind you) is the most common killer.
- Contrast. The app needs to see your hip and foot. Black shorts against a black trainer, or loose clothing hiding your hip line, will trip it up. Wear something that contrasts with the background.
- Side view, level camera. Frame the whole bike and rider from the side, with the camera level with the top tube.
- Keep pedaling. Pedal smoothly all the way through the final beep. Slowing or stopping mid-capture loses frames.
Do I need stickers or markers on my body or bike? No. BFF EZ tracks you with markerless AI, so there's nothing to attach. Just wear clothing that contrasts with your background so the app can see your hip and foot clearly (see above).
Do I have to be on a trainer? Yes. BFF EZ needs you pedaling in one place, so a stationary trainer or stationary bike is required. Free-pedaling outdoors won't work.
Does a smart trainer or smart bike work? Yes. Anything that holds the bike stationary while you pedal is fine, including smart trainers (a Wahoo KICKR or Tacx, say) and smart bikes. BFF EZ works across bike types too, road, gravel, mountain, and TT.
Why can't I use the front (selfie) camera? BFF EZ needs slow-motion at 240 fps to read your pedal stroke accurately, and only your phone's rear camera records that fast. The front camera can't hit that frame rate, so set up with the back of the phone facing you.
The rule: If a result looks off, re-record before you start adjusting anything. A clean recording fixes most "wrong number" problems.
