Saddle fore/aft

about 10 minutes Lesson 4 of 6 Section 1 of 8

At a glance

What you'll learn:

  • Why fore/aft is the next adjustment and what goes wrong too far forward or too far back
  • The two readings BFF EZ uses: knee-over-pedal (KOPS) and effective saddle angle, and why the target depends on your bike type
  • How to read your fore/aft result and its graph
  • The co-dependence between fore/aft and saddle height: move one, the other shifts
  • The one rule that prevents a common mistake: never fix arm reach by moving the saddle
  • How to physically move your saddle fore/aft

Before you start: If your reach to the bars felt too long, would you slide the saddle forward to close the gap? It's a reasonable instinct, sliding the saddle forward really does bring you closer to the bars. We'll hold onto that thought and pick it back up in the section on arm reach. The answer isn't the obvious one.
